The exact free-tile rule
A Mahjong Solitaire tile is free only when both of these statements are true:
- No tile overlaps or sits on top of it.
- At least one horizontal side — left or right — is completely open.
If either condition fails, the tile is blocked.
Top clear does not always mean playable
A common beginner mistake is to see the whole face of a tile and assume it can be selected. If another tile touches it on the left and another touches it on the right, it is still locked. You must first remove a neighbouring tile so one side becomes open.
One open side is enough
A tile does not need both sides open. If its left side is blocked but its right side is clear — and nothing covers the top — it is free. The same is true in reverse.
Why removing one pair can free several tiles
When a matched pair disappears, it can change the geometry around multiple neighbours. A tile underneath may become uncovered, while a tile beside it may suddenly gain an open side. That is why a strategically chosen match can create several new pairs at once.
Which free pair should you choose?
If two pairs are legal, prefer the pair that releases the most constrained tiles. Removing an outer tile that was already easy to reach may change very little. Removing a tile from a high layer or a tile that blocks a long row can transform the board.
