Mahjong Solitaire in 30 seconds
Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle. You remove tiles in pairs, but only tiles that are currently free can be selected. Clear every pair from the layout to win.
Mahjong Fantasy’s browser edition uses the complete classic 144-tile Turtle with 72 removable pairs. Play unlimited Free Play boards or the dated Daily Challenge; the full Mahjong Fantasy game adds many more layouts and a fully rotatable 3D board.
What makes a tile free?
A tile is free when nothing is stacked on top of it and at least one of its horizontal sides is open. A tile can have a neighbour on the left and still be playable if the right side is open, or vice versa.
If both sides are blocked, the tile cannot be selected even when its top surface is completely visible.
How matching works
Select one free tile, then select a second compatible free tile. Number, wind and dragon tiles match identical faces. The four Flower tiles may match one another, and the four Season tiles may match one another. The pair is removed from the board, which may uncover tiles below or open the side of a neighbouring tile.
That chain reaction is the heart of the puzzle: a good pair does more than disappear; it makes the next part of the board accessible.
How to clear the board
- Scan the upper and outer edges for free tiles.
- Find two matching free tiles.
- Prefer a pair that uncovers stacked tiles or opens a blocked side.
- Rescan after every removal because the set of free tiles has changed.
- Remove all 72 pairs to clear the classic 144-tile Turtle.
What if there is no pair?
If no matching free pair remains, the current route cannot continue. In the browser game you can restart the board or start a new Free Play game. The full Mahjong Fantasy game adds tools such as hints, shuffle, legal-tile highlighting and undo/redo.
Mahjong Solitaire is not four-player Mahjong
The name is shared, but the games are different. Four-player Mahjong is a competitive draw-and-discard game built around hands and melds. Mahjong Solitaire is a one-player layout puzzle where you remove matching exposed tiles. If your goal is to learn this browser game, focus on the free-tile rule rather than the rules of traditional multiplayer Mahjong.
